Six things you can do to prepare your mind and body for IVF
Collab Perioperative Nurse Manager Anna Lopez shares everything you need to know about preparing for your IVF journey
“My first grandchild is an IVF baby. So, IVF is personal and professional for me. I witnessed firsthand the struggle that my daughter and her husband went through. That experience, along with my two decades as a nurse in fertility care, brings me closer to my patients mentally and emotionally,” says Collab Perioperative Nurse Manager Anna Lopez.
Deciding to pursue IVF is a monumental step in your fertility journey—one that is both hopeful and, at times, can be overwhelming. If you’ve been facing challenges with conception, beginning your IVF journey can bring a sense of optimism. At the same time, we deeply understand the emotional and physical demands of this decision. At our state-of-the-art Walnut Creek fertility clinic, you will receive care from a team of experts, including some of the Bay Area's leading fertility doctors, nurses, and embryologists, all dedicated to supporting your path to parenthood.
What you should know before starting IVF—how to prepare mentally and physically
In this post, our nurse, Anna Lopez, offers valuable tips on how to prepare both mentally and physically as you get ready to begin the IVF journey. With two decades of experience in fertility nursing, she has supported and guided countless couples through their fertility treatments. Along the way, she’s gathered invaluable insights and advice. Here are Anna’s top IVF recommendations:
1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle
When you start thinking about IVF, it's also a great time to examine your lifestyle and try to be as healthy as possible. Eat a well-balanced diet, exercise regularly, prioritize sleep and stress relief, and do not smoke or drink alcohol. It’s a good idea to avoid contact with toxic chemicals found in products with added fragrances and BPA-containing plastic containers. Also, take prenatal vitamins with folic acid (improves egg quality) and coQ10 (improves egg quality, supports general energy). When you care for yourself, you’ll feel better and be equipped for the journey ahead.
2. Involve partner from the very beginning
From the first visit to our East Bay fertility clinic, I prioritize including partners in the process because it is a path the couple is walking together. Supportive partners can be an invaluable source of comfort for the person undergoing IVF treatments, helping to alleviate stress and providing emotional support. If you are single, I recommend involving a friend or family member.
3. Have realistic expectations
In fertility, everyone’s journey will look different, with its own ups and downs and ebbs and flows. The good news is that at Collab, we are equipped to successfully address nearly all fertility challenges, offering a range of options, including donor sperm or eggs and gestational carriers, when necessary. Our dedicated team will hold your hand through your journey, ensuring you make well-informed decisions while prioritizing your physical and emotional well-being. We also collaborate with reproductive psychologists who provide invaluable personalized emotional support.
4. Do your research to understand the financial commitment (we can help)
In addition to mental and physical preparation, IVF also requires financial planning. I recommend researching the costs involved and selecting a clinic like Collab that offers access to a financial counselor. They can guide you through insurance coverage, financing options, and available discount programs to help make the process more affordable.
5. Find a physician who is a good fit
Take the time to interview fertility doctors and find someone who aligns with your values and beliefs and is someone you can trust. Our Collab patients often share how easy it is to talk to Dr. Segal. They appreciate her extensive knowledge and how she takes the time to truly understand each patient, carefully explaining all available options.
6. Don’t wait too long
While we successfully treat women into their mid-40s, it's important to note that IVF success rates begin to decline around age 35 and drop even more significantly by age 40. If age is a factor in your fertility journey, consider being open to options like the use of donor eggs. Additionally, if you're not finding success at your current clinic, it may be time to explore other alternatives. Look for a place like Collab, where a team of experts will take the time to educate you about all your options and hold your hand every step of the way.
